Organic design
I remember myself reading some forum where guys discussed vector graphics and one of them mentioned that vector is dead.
It doesn’t have that random part in it. It could be polished as many times as needed, and there is no trace of materials you use. It doesn’t have anything organic about it. It’s perfect, cold and never changes. It’s dead.
That’s one interesting way to put it.
And that made me thinking about evolution in design. I mean not just graphic design but design in general – industrial design, product design, and architecture.
People used to live in the world of more organic things before – materials they used were taken from nature and they used manual labor to produce products from it. There was always uniqueness and life in every product. You rarely would find two exactly the same products. All buildings were unique, all clothing, weapons – everything.
But then came industrial era, where synthetic materials and machines are used to produce everything. Having same standard product became a good thing. You know what you are going to get and it’s going to perform exactly as it supposed to.
People enjoy simplicity of forms and shapes everything designed now is simple, elegant and perfectly shaped.
But looking at the biggest designer in this world – Nature, I have a feeling it’s not going to stay the same forever. Nature has simple way to position things perfectly according to geometric formulas too. But it’s on a basic level of simple things. As things and forms of life get more complex, they get more diversified in design too.
And that’s the beauty of organic world. There are no 2 same things in that world. They could be very close but still unique.
As technology will progress and materials we use will get more complex too, I think people will come back to designing original things. They all will have life in them, some kind of form of imperfection. There are not going to be exactly same computers – they will be close in it’s abilities but one will be a bit faster thinker but not as good of explorer as another one. It will have some wrinkles on it’s body and a name ; )
We will have more organic products around us – every one filled with life, history and it’s own personality.
I’m looking forward to that.
