CSS mockups with Photoshop?

I already complained about lack of tools for designers to work on websites design, not just page design. Of course i’m not alone there. And some people are trying to find ways to make our favorite applications produce better results.
Is it working?
I’d say read this article and be the judge.

Download time. How important is it?

I stumbled upon this research – The Truth About Download Time from User Interface Engineering website. And it makes you think that you should be more critical to what users say about your site and try to find the real problem they are referring to.

Speaking at Webmaster Jam Session

Yesterday I returned from Dallas Texas, where I was speaking on Webmaster Jam Session conference. Guys from Coffecup did an awesome job organizing the conference and inviting really nice speakers. I was actually a little bit intimidated to speak together with all those famous people.

All in all the conference was very informative and had that warm feeling where you know it’s all about people. You can almost see how web and technologies on web are turning into things that actually care more about providing people best and comfortable tools and experiences. And it was really pleasing to see that developers and designers really understand and value that. A lot of things were discussed and learned. Eric Meyer opened conference with his speech “A Decade of Style”. He really deserves the title CSS guru and you can see how passionate he is about the subject.
I really enjoyed Jared Spool’s speech on how users navigate through sites. I read his paper on this before but hearing it from him directly was so much better and much more fun.

Great presentation from Nick Finck, on layout standards and techniques.

Unfortunately I couldn’t attend all the sessions. Conference was divided in two rooms and everybody had to pick which sessions to attend. I was talking about user experience in ecommerce on session named “ecommerce for everyday people” with John Fallon. We were competing with Andy Budd for attention from attendees. He gave his speech “Be a Web Design Superhero” at the same time and let’s face it he won. But we still had a nice size audience and it gave the session even more of a warm feeling.

Daren Ward did a great job speaking about search engine optimization. He is really a SEO genius. Bryan Veloso talked about photoshop tips and tricks and although he said he doesn’t usually present in public he did a great job. All in all it was an awesome event and I was very pleased with both audience and speakers. Organizers did an incredibly great job with everything and frankly speaking I can’t wait till the next webjam session.

For those who are interested, I’m planning on writing an article based on what I used for my speech. So hang on in there. It’s coming.
And by the way there are some nice pictures from the conference

I went through all the pictures and the only picture of myself I could find is actually the first one in the set
That’s a solid cactus t-shirt I was wearing. Here is more about the t-shirt

HOW Conference 2006

After last crazy weeks of intense work and preparation I’m ready to leave to Vegas for the HOW Conference. Because of staying busy all the time I even didn’t have time to get excited about it. But now my excitement is finally starting to buildup. To see 3 000 people with same interests as yours, speaking your language definitely makes me feel like I’m not alone. I’m looking forward to raise my spirit and get the creativity boost…

I will try to share my excitement and new knowledge I get in my blog in my following posts. Vegas here I come :)

Redesigning a Simple Table

I found post of Luke Wroblewski on UXmatters website where he turned this table

Into this

I think I found even better solution to simplify this part of user interface.
I should mention though that improvements are based on some assumptions. First of them is that the table we design is a part of some interface of some kind of application. It could be web or desktop based software. And second assumption is that users work with application on some repetitive basis. That could mean they work with it at least more than once in their life and it could be as often as several times daily.

With those assumptions I think we can turn the table into this:

This way I think user will need even less time to see all the information presented in the table. Especially it will be easy for experienced frequent users. They will automatically know that first number is current day, second is current month and third one is for previous month. For new users or users in doubt once they rollover the number for which they don’t know the meaning, they will see a description.

By using interactivity we can build even more condensed informational structures.
To be right it’s not an improvement of Luke’s design it’s just a proposal for simplifying it for frequent users.

Back in Business Event by Yahoo, Solid Cactus and Bell South

I’m back from New Orleans, where Yahoo organized seminars for small business owners in region with the help from Solid Cactus and Bell South.

I’m really proud to be a part of it. And I hope that a lot of small businesses will benefit from it and will manage to build great online presence to help them overcome the difficulties of recovery.

Here are some pictures from the event. And pictures of affected by hurricane Katrina areas.

Can we trust Google?

How can you trust company that can loose control over own blog by stupid mistake?
I guess it depends on what that company does.
How about company, collecting personal data of millions of users all over the world?

Next time they will make their databases available to everybody by assigning empty passwords and would say “d’oh!” – “our bad”.
Doh

From Official Google Blog: And we are back:

“The Google Blog was unavailable for a short time tonight. We quickly learned from our initial investigation that there was no systemwide vulnerability for Blogger. We’ll let you know more about what did happen once we finish looking into it.
Update: We’ve determined the cause of tonight’s outage. The blog was mistakenly deleted by us (d’oh!) which allowed the blog address to be temporarily claimed by another user. This was not a hack, and nobody guessed our password. Our bad.”

This stuff is scary.
Real scary.

Don't shoot the puppy!

Some things are genious. Usually simple things. No. Always simple things.

All genious is simple when you see it. But to get to that people go really long way.

One of the examples – social software. How easy is that? And how much fun. What people were thinking before? Why we didn’t have blogs 10 years ago?

Well, while you’re thinking about it you might as well play this game – it’s genious in it’s own simple way – Don’t shoot the puppy
