CSS mockups with Photoshop?

I already complained about lack of tools for designers to work on websites design, not just page design. Of course i’m not alone there. And some people are trying to find ways to make our favorite applications produce better results.
Is it working?
I’d say read this article and be the judge.

Download time. How important is it?

I stumbled upon this research – The Truth About Download Time from User Interface Engineering website. And it makes you think that you should be more critical to what users say about your site and try to find the real problem they are referring to.

HOW Conference 2006

After last crazy weeks of intense work and preparation I’m ready to leave to Vegas for the HOW Conference. Because of staying busy all the time I even didn’t have time to get excited about it. But now my excitement is finally starting to buildup. To see 3 000 people with same interests as yours, speaking your language definitely makes me feel like I’m not alone. I’m looking forward to raise my spirit and get the creativity boost…

I will try to share my excitement and new knowledge I get in my blog in my following posts. Vegas here I come :)

Redesigning a Simple Table

I found post of Luke Wroblewski on UXmatters website where he turned this table

Into this

I think I found even better solution to simplify this part of user interface.
I should mention though that improvements are based on some assumptions. First of them is that the table we design is a part of some interface of some kind of application. It could be web or desktop based software. And second assumption is that users work with application on some repetitive basis. That could mean they work with it at least more than once in their life and it could be as often as several times daily.

With those assumptions I think we can turn the table into this:

This way I think user will need even less time to see all the information presented in the table. Especially it will be easy for experienced frequent users. They will automatically know that first number is current day, second is current month and third one is for previous month. For new users or users in doubt once they rollover the number for which they don’t know the meaning, they will see a description.

By using interactivity we can build even more condensed informational structures.
To be right it’s not an improvement of Luke’s design it’s just a proposal for simplifying it for frequent users.

"Thank you for your interest in Google Page Creator!"

I wanted to try new product by google – Google Page Creator, but was told that there is not enough seats for the show and I have to wait. That’s ok I’ll wait.
The idea of easy page generation was always interesting for me and I think that now we can see something more interesting and useful than goecities and other old players in this area.
My thinking is that in a long run technology should allow people to forget about technology and worry about creativity only. Coders and programmers will be substituted by machines.
Anyway can’t wait to see what google offers in page creation for non technical folks in 2006.

Photo Marketing Association Annual Show

Every year professionals and photo enthusiasts wait for Photo Marketing Association Show to find out about new toys for themselves. Many manufacturers prefer to release their new products on this show this time of the year. And more attention than others as always gets Canon with it’s replacement of most popular tools for digital photographers. This year the most awaited upgrade for many photographers is Canon D30 – semiprofessional digital SLR camera.

Canon EOS 30D

Although some folks seem to be disappointed a little with just minor updates to already beautiful body, it’s really hard to make something significantly better than Canon D20. And Canon is forced to give something more evolutionary than revolutionary at this stage of development in digital photography technology. It seems like the industry is getting to the point where it’s pretty mature and public shouldn’t expect big advances in technology that were happening couple years ago. The good news is that we have beautiful tools for photography, which are so good that it’s hard to improve them :)

You can always find more information about PMA 2006 on Phil’s Askey site www.dpreview.com or right here .

Is design art?

Or it’s more of a science on accurate position of elements, exact use of color and placement of visual stimulators? If it is commercial design and it’s aimed to sell, build trust, develop a relationship, can it be called art?

Solid Cactus exhibition booth

It was the first event for Solid Cactus when our company was able to use its new booth specially designed for industry exhibitions.
Although I’m one of those designers who usually hate there own work and never satisfied about it, with booth design I’m pretty happy how it came out.
It’s really colorful and grabs attention. At least it did on this exhibition. We will see how this baby will work during bigger events when surrounded by some major names in e-commerce, internet and informational technology.

Special thanks go to Randy and Justin without whom this booth wouldn’t be what it is now.

I must say it’s the biggest piece of design I have ever worked on so far (of course in physical size) :)
